SMM 2022 – Chris-Marine showcases its Monitoring equipment in Hamburg and celebrates 60 years as a company

Chris-Marine will exhibit its Monitoring equipment at SMM in Hamburg on September 6 to 9. In addition, we are delighted to celebrate 60 years as a company at SMM 2022 in Hamburg. Customers and other visitors are welcome to join us for a drink and a chat in booth A3.402 throughout the week.

It’s not a secret that IMO has set the target to mitigate CO2 emissions from ships by at least 40% by 2030 compared to 2008 levels. IMO has therefore adopted EEXI and CII, a set of amendments to existing regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vessels.

To help customers comply with the EEXI requirements, Chris-Marine has developed a Shaft Power Limitation solution (Chris-Marine ShaPoLi) that will enable existing ships to meet the minimal energy efficiency level to comply with the upcoming regulations. We feel privileged to be able to give SMM visitors a chance to meet with our experts face-to-face and learn more about the advantages of Chris-Marine ShaPoLi.

On display in our booth, we will therefore have products like LEMAG ECI, LEMAG Shaftpower and LEMAG SPEAT. We will also showcase our state-of the-art liner condition camera, Chris-Marine LCC. The camera provides a full view of the cylinder liner and is a complement to the LDM. Together, LCC and LDM guarantee unbeatable precision when determining cylinder liner condition.

Our experienced technical experts will be present throughout the week to demonstrate our products and methods. This is an excellent opportunity to get a closer look at our products and get questions answered by our experts.

On September 6 to 8, we will have a get-together in our booth at 13.00 and hope to see you there for some lunch tapas.

Last but not least, on Wednesday, September 7, we are celebrating our 60-year anniversary as a company. We would therefore like to welcome you to our booth at 15.00 to celebrate this special occasion.

We look forward to meeting you soon in booth A3.402.

Welcome!

IACS update on EEXI implementation guidelines

The IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) held its 78th session from June 6 to 10, 2022. Highlights included the finalization of guidelines for EEXI, CII and SEEMP. Additionally, after being reviewed and noted by the MEPC 78 committee, the new “EEXI Implementation Guidelines” were finally approved and published by the International Association of Classification Societies IACS.

The new IACS recommendation (No. 172) confirms that a Shaft Power Limitation system (“ShaPoLi”), independent from the engine automation, fulfills all the IMO requirements according to MEPC resolution 335(76).

The system must constantly monitor and alert the Master or the OICNW in the bridge in case the power exceeds the limit predefined by EEXI calculation and 2 options are available for the crew:

The Chris-Marine ShaPoLi system meets all the requirements for the installation onboard to be approved, under reference to the explanations stated in IACS guidelines.

At Chris-Marine, we are well prepared to deliver many systems within the brief time available for retrofit and compliance.

Moreover, the revised 2022 EEXI guidelines MEPC.1/Circ.902 now provide a method for in-service performance measurements for cases where the speed-power curve is not available, or the sea trial report does not contain the EEDI or design load draught condition. The ship speed (Vref) can be obtained from the in-service performance measurement method for the purpose of EEXI calculation. One of the most important aspects of a successful in-service performance measurement procedure is the preparation. Relevant instruments should be calibrated and their operational conditions prior to the commencement of the trials should be confirmed by the verifier. Among those sensors, but not limited to, that the ship should be equipped with are a shaft torque meter, anemometer and fuel flow meter which are offered in our Chris-Marine monitoring portfolio.

WEBINAR: EEXI Compliance through Chris-Marine® ShaPoLi Solution

Webinar

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is introducing new mandatory measures to cut the carbon intensity of international shipping and improve ship energy efficiency – the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) – which are coming into effect from January 1, 2023.

Despite the impending implementation of the measures, ship owners can swiftly prepare their fleets for compliance with the help of Chris-Marine’s ShaPoLi solution, which was designed to meet all technical, operational and time requirements.

Getting a ship ready for compliance doesn’t have to be a time-consuming and expensive process. Our ShaPoLi technology enables you to achieve EEXI requirements while adhering to a limited deadline. This technology safely and effectively limits shaft power during normal operation, regardless of the engine control-system or powertrain combination onboard.

WEBINAR: Maximize the lifetime of your liners in the most sustainable, cost-efficient, and environmentally friendly way.

WEBINAR

The purpose of this event is to update you, since our last session in Nov. 2020, on the current market situation and the challenges ship owners clearly face with their liners. It is a fact, that the engines produced today have a significantly shorter lifetime than they used to. The low sulphur initiative has now proven to negatively affect the wear of your cylinder liners.

More and more scrubber installations take place too, with cold corrosion as a result. But scuffed cylinders can be reconditioned if the problem is detected in time. In this session we will go through processes that can help you maximize the lifetime of your liners in the most sustainable, cost-efficient, and environmentally friendly way.

As an independent third party, Chris-Marine is regularly consulted by ship owners and global engine manufacturers who wish to receive more in-depth knowledge when it comes to cylinder condition monitoring & reconditioning. Did you hear about the updated VRL?

The Chris-Marine VRL is a dual-purpose tool for maintenance of medium-speed diesel engine cylinder heads and it facilitates complete maintenance of cylinder head air intake / exhaust valve seats and seat pockets.

VRL dual spindle

The VRL can be used for maintenance of cylinder head valve seats, which can be restored to their original contact angle and surface geometry and surface roughness. The VRL can also be used for renovation of cylinder heads where seat pockets have experienced corrosion or been scratched in connection with change of seat.

Use the VRL to machine to suitable oversize and insert relevant oversize seat. The VRL cutting angle can be adjusted and the VRL is compatible with the majority of medium-speed 4-stroke engines, including but not limited to engines from Wärtsilä, MAN, Pielstick, HiMSEN and Rolls Royce.

Next generation spindles

Recently, Chris-Marine introduced next generation of VRL mounting spindles. The spindles are auto-centering and allows for quick positioning of VRL machine on cylinder head. In addition, these spindles features a cut-out in the central part of the spindle, allowing a small measurement tool to be used while VRL is in place. This makes it very quick to check result of machining and reduces time spent on completion of recess machining job with more than 50%.

Measuring slot

The new VRL mounting spindles are available for existing VRL’s and will be standard for new VRLs unless otherwise agreed. Along with the new generation of VRL guiding spindles, we also introduce a special toolkit for measuring of the machining result with the VRL in place.

Contact us for more information or a quote for the new spindles and the toolkit.

To learn more about the VRL, check out the product page for technical information, product sheet, pictures and video!

We will share a booth with our local distributor, UMAR Shipping Services, and you will find us in Hall 4, booth 4.125. Here we will tell you much more about how we can help you increase efficiency, independency and value in your company through our complete maintenance solutions.

Save money by monitoring your cylinder liners

At Posidonia 2016, we will be showcasing the newly upgraded Liner Diameter Measurement tool, designed and developed for accurate measuring of cylinder liner diameters without the need to remove cylinder head or valve housing.

How to use the LDM – Liner measurement instruction

The Liner Diameter Measurement tool can be used for verifying cylinder wear and deformation prior to dry-docking or for following up cylinder wear and deformation on a single engine of interest by complementing regular scavenging port inspections with cylinder liner measurement.

Recently, some of our Technical Support and After Sales Technicians were onboard one of DS Norden’s vessels to measure the liner wear on a MAN 7S50MC-C engine.

As we have previously heard from customers that they would like information on how to use the Liner Diameter measurement tool, the job was not only finished according to DS Norden’s satisfaction, but also resulted in this step-by-step video of how to use the LDM.

We hope this video will help our customers when using the LDM – however, if you feel more comfortable with our service technicians doing the job for you, we are happy to help!

MAN Diesel approval of LDM

We are very proud to receive this appreciation certificate from MAN Diesel & Turbo, as well as an official “No Objection Letter” for our LDM tool, which measures liner wear and deformation.

During the past year, the liner wear measuring instrument has been tested onboard several vessels in close cooperation with the well-known engine builder and as a result, MAN Diesel & Turbo has found that the LDM is acceptable as cylinder liner dimension measurement instrument, especially for repeated measurements for evaluation of the cylinder liner trend wear profile.

The majority of the LDM tests have been carried out on MAN B&W two-stroke engines of the type S80ME-C, where the measurement results have been validated against the traditional manual measuring method and found to be reliable also with repeated measurements.

Looking forward to Europort Rotterdam

This week it’s time for Europort Rotterdam, where we are co-exibiting with our dutch agent, Venteville BV.

Drop by our booth 8207 in hall 8 to take a closer look at the automatic honing machine, and learn how it may help you save valuable time and resources when rectifying your or your client’s cylinder liners.

NEW: Automatic honing and deglazing machine

We are proud to present the fully automatic honing & deglazing machine for restoration of medium speed engine cylinder liner geometry and surface structure. The new honing machine features an electric hoist and an electric driving unit, which consumes less energy than compressed air and creates less noise.

The “HON A” also boasts adjustable stone pressure and a programmable handheld PLC controller, which makes it possible to specify the exact cross pattern angle, adjust honing speed and time as well as to set the upper and lower turning point.

Increased activity in South America

Recently, Chris-Marine & IOP Marine secured another large order for a huge power plant company in South America with overhaul and maintenance tools for two of their service workshops, who manage six different 4-stroke diesel engines.

This order is one of the largest in the company’s history, but no longer a seldom seen sight. In 2015, Chris-Marine & IOP Marine has received several orders from the South American continent, and thereby cemented our position as the key provider of both engine care tools and training in Latin America.

It is noteworthy, that once again the customer not only has a need for separate machines, but relies on our expertise in setting up a complete workshop as well as conducting training in the appropriate use and maintenance actions.

The complete Chris-Marine & IOP Marine workshop set-up includes the large ultrasonic washing tank, grinding machines for valve seats and spindles, the new automatic honing machine as well as fuel injector and pump testing equipment.

MAN Diesel approval for Ultrasonic systems

After cleaning several different MAN engine parts in our Ultrasonic 130 Twin cleaning tank, the year 2014 was completed in one of the best ways possible, as we received the official MAN Diesel
certificate for our range of Ultrasonic cleaners.

The Ultrasonic cleaning tanks offer a solution to the cleaning requirements of both power generation and marine industries catering for both onboard cleaning of smaller engine parts, e.g. fuel injectors, as well as for workshop cleaning of larger engine parts such as pistons, inter coolers and cylinder heads.

What is it worth to be able to monitor liner wear?

At SMM 2014, Chris-Marine will present an updated version of the Liner Diameter Measuring instrument (LDM), which can help ship-owners save thousands of dollars.

With a liner costing 50.000 USD in a large 12 cylinder engine, a rise of the wear rate from 0,05mm/1000h to 0,2mm/1000h will make the average annual replacement cost of the liners rise from 26.000 USD to 105.000 USD. This does not take into account the labour, transport and other spares needed.

With the updated Liner Diameter Measuring instrument measuring liners without removing the cylinder cover or the exhaust valve has become simpler than ever and can now be done in under an hour per unit by opening the inspection hatch and removing the indicator cock on the units that are measured.
