The IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) held its 78th session from June 6 to 10, 2022. Highlights included the finalization of guidelines for EEXI, CII and SEEMP. Additionally, after being reviewed and noted by the MEPC 78 committee, the new “EEXI Implementation Guidelines” were finally approved and published by the International Association of Classification Societies IACS.
The new IACS recommendation (No. 172) confirms that a Shaft Power Limitation system (“ShaPoLi”), independent from the engine automation, fulfills all the IMO requirements according to MEPC resolution 335(76).
The system must constantly monitor and alert the Master or the OICNW in the bridge in case the power exceeds the limit predefined by EEXI calculation and 2 options are available for the crew:
The Chris-Marine ShaPoLi system meets all the requirements for the installation onboard to be approved, under reference to the explanations stated in IACS guidelines.
At Chris-Marine, we are well prepared to deliver many systems within the brief time available for retrofit and compliance.
Moreover, the revised 2022 EEXI guidelines MEPC.1/Circ.902 now provide a method for in-service performance measurements for cases where the speed-power curve is not available, or the sea trial report does not contain the EEDI or design load draught condition. The ship speed (Vref) can be obtained from the in-service performance measurement method for the purpose of EEXI calculation. One of the most important aspects of a successful in-service performance measurement procedure is the preparation. Relevant instruments should be calibrated and their operational conditions prior to the commencement of the trials should be confirmed by the verifier. Among those sensors, but not limited to, that the ship should be equipped with are a shaft torque meter, anemometer and fuel flow meter which are offered in our Chris-Marine monitoring portfolio.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is introducing new mandatory measures to cut the carbon intensity of international shipping and improve ship energy efficiency – the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) – which are coming into effect from January 1, 2023.
Despite the impending implementation of the measures, ship owners can swiftly prepare their fleets for compliance with the help of Chris-Marine’s ShaPoLi solution, which was designed to meet all technical, operational and time requirements.
Getting a ship ready for compliance doesn’t have to be a time-consuming and expensive process. Our ShaPoLi technology enables you to achieve EEXI requirements while adhering to a limited deadline. This technology safely and effectively limits shaft power during normal operation, regardless of the engine control-system or powertrain combination onboard.

WEBINAR
The purpose of this event is to update you, since our last session in Nov. 2020, on the current market situation and the challenges ship owners clearly face with their liners. It is a fact, that the engines produced today have a significantly shorter lifetime than they used to. The low sulphur initiative has now proven to negatively affect the wear of your cylinder liners.
More and more scrubber installations take place too, with cold corrosion as a result. But scuffed cylinders can be reconditioned if the problem is detected in time. In this session we will go through processes that can help you maximize the lifetime of your liners in the most sustainable, cost-efficient, and environmentally friendly way.
As an independent third party, Chris-Marine is regularly consulted by ship owners and global engine manufacturers who wish to receive more in-depth knowledge when it comes to cylinder condition monitoring & reconditioning. Chris-Marine has, in addition to measuring and collecting data from a significant number of cylinders, also helped developing reconditioning procedures with engine manufacturers such as MAN and Wärtsilä. We would like to share our knowledge and findings with you during the webinar.

Malmö, Sweden, October 12, 2016 – Chris-Marine AB today announces its acquisition of monitoring products from German company LEMAG LEHMANN & MICHELS GmbH (LEMAG). The products will complement Chris-Marine’s portfolio of products and services and will further strengthen Chris-Marine’s position as a leading supplier of quality maintenance products and methods for maintenance of combustion engines.
The products that will be integrated in Chris-Marine’s range of products are LEMAG® SPEAT, Shaftpower®, Cylinder Pressure Indicators, Calibration tools and Crankshaft Deflection Indicators.
In connection with the acquisition, Chris-Marine establishes a subsidiary in Germany with key employees from LEMAG. The new Chris-Marine office will be situated at the LEMAG premises in Rellingen close to Hamburg.
”We are welcoming our new colleagues and their expertise to the Chris-Marine family and we are really excited about the integration of LEMAG’s quality monitoring instruments into the Chris-Marine portfolio of products,” says Jens Groth, CEO Chris-Marine/IOP Marine.
“The LEMAG range of monitoring instruments not only complements our own range of products for combustion engines, but also supports our business idea to help customers optimize the running of their engines in order to save time and money while keeping the environment in mind,” Jens Groth continues.
The Chris-Marine VRL is a dual-purpose tool for maintenance of medium-speed diesel engine cylinder heads and it facilitates complete maintenance of cylinder head air intake / exhaust valve seats and seat pockets.
The VRL can be used for maintenance of cylinder head valve seats, which can be restored to their original contact angle and surface geometry and surface roughness. The VRL can also be used for renovation of cylinder heads where seat pockets have experienced corrosion or been scratched in connection with change of seat.
Use the VRL to machine to suitable oversize and insert relevant oversize seat. The VRL cutting angle can be adjusted and the VRL is compatible with the majority of medium-speed 4-stroke engines, including but not limited to engines from Wärtsilä, MAN, Pielstick, HiMSEN and Rolls Royce.
Recently, Chris-Marine introduced next generation of VRL mounting spindles. The spindles are auto-centering and allows for quick positioning of VRL machine on cylinder head. In addition, these spindles features a cut-out in the central part of the spindle, allowing a small measurement tool to be used while VRL is in place. This makes it very quick to check result of machining and reduces time spent on completion of recess machining job with more than 50%.
The new VRL mounting spindles are available for existing VRL’s and will be standard for new VRLs unless otherwise agreed. Along with the new generation of VRL guiding spindles, we also introduce a special toolkit for measuring of the machining result with the VRL in place.
Contact us for more information or a quote for the new spindles and the toolkit.
To learn more about the VRL, check out the product page for technical information, product sheet, pictures and video!

During the past year, the liner wear measuring instrument has been tested onboard several vessels in close cooperation with the well-known engine builder and as a result, MAN Diesel & Turbo has found that the LDM is acceptable as cylinder liner dimension measurement instrument, especially for repeated measurements for evaluation of the cylinder liner trend wear profile.
The majority of the LDM tests have been carried out on MAN B&W two-stroke engines of the type S80ME-C, where the measurement results have been validated against the traditional manual measuring method and found to be reliable also with repeated measurements.

At SMM 2014, Chris-Marine will present an updated version of the Liner Diameter Measuring instrument (LDM), which can help ship-owners save thousands of dollars.
With a liner costing 50.000 USD in a large 12 cylinder engine, a rise of the wear rate from 0,05mm/1000h to 0,2mm/1000h will make the average annual replacement cost of the liners rise from 26.000 USD to 105.000 USD. This does not take into account the labour, transport and other spares needed.
With the updated Liner Diameter Measuring instrument measuring liners without removing the cylinder cover or the exhaust valve has become simpler than ever and can now be done in under an hour per unit by opening the inspection hatch and removing the indicator cock on the units that are measured.
At SMM customers and partners will have the opportunity to meet our experienced consultants at our booth A3.103 to discuss the optimal ways of overhauling diesel engines onboard ships and in diesel-driven power plants.
Furthermore, we will exhibit the 3 products included in the unique newbuilding campaign offer, which will be sold with 20% discount until December 1, 2014.
Among other engine care tools presented at SMM is the updated electrically driven honing machine, the fuel injector grinding tool and the Ultrasonic cleaning tank.
At the open-air site between halls A3 & A4, booth FG.002, SMM visitors will also have the opportunity to experience the mobile workshop container that enables crew to overhaul engine parts on site. Each afternoon during SMM we will serve grilled sausages – and maybe even a cold refreshment – to those visiting the container and participating in the website contest.
Participate in the daily competition and be the winner who can bring home a LEGO model of the Triple-E ship!
On Wednesday, September 10, all customers and partners are invited to enjoy drinks and barbeque at the launch party for the new Chris-Marine / IOP Marine website that will take place at the open-air site next to the container at 4 PM.
