At SMM 2014, Chris-Marine will be presenting an updated version of the Liner Diameter Measuring instrument (LDM), a device that can help ship-owners save thousands of dollars.
SMM 2014 focus: What is it worth to monitor cylinder liner wear?
With a liner costing 50.000 USD in a large 12 cylinder engine, a rise of the wear rate from 0,05mm/1000h to 0,2mm/1000h will make the average annual liner replacement cost increase from 26.000 USD to 105.000 USD. This is without labor, transport and spares taken into account.
Thanks to the updated Liner Diameter Measuring instrument, measuring liners has become simpler than ever. Without the need for removing the cylinder cover, nor the exhaust valve, liner diameter measuring and can be done in under an hour per unit, by opening the inspection hatch and removing the indicator cock on the units that are measured.
About LDM: User-friendly Liner Diameter Measuring
LDM is an Instrument used to take Liner Diameter Measurements. Abnormal wear and deformation resulting from slow-steaming, new lube oils, or changed route are conveniently picked up by the LDM. As a result, prompt countermeasures can me taken. The latest LDM-generation offers 13 hours of continuous user-time without intermediate recharging, which makes it even more user-friendly than before. Like previous versions, it can measure all 2-stroke engines with a bore from 500 to 980 mm, without removing the cylinder cover or exhaust valve housing.
The clover-leafing measurement feature allows the user to detect non-oval wear and deformation like:
- heat load deformation, due to slow-steaming retrofitting
- injector erosion
- lube oil distribution related wear
